Whether you’re renovating your home or building one from scratch, new kitchen cabinets are usually the most expensive investment you make in the kitchen. For that reason, you want to get a high quality product and a design that suits both you and the space itself. But this rationale doesn’t just apply to the kitchen. The same is true of the bathroom, laundry room and closet cabinetry as well. There are two options for you, custom or prefabricated cabinets. This week we’re discussing the negatives and positives of prefabricated cabinets versus custom built cabinetry. For all the time and money you MIGHT save with prefab (there’s no guarantee of either), you certainly won’t be happy with the end result.
The major difference between prefabricated and custom cabinets is the cost. Prefab cabinets are undeniably cheaper, but as the old saying goes you get what you pay for. Think about the way the costs get cut for prefabricated cabinets:
They aren’t fit to your exact space.
This is how manufacturer’s save time and material costs. As much as these companies may claim to design prefab cabinets to your specifications, errors with angles and spacing will occur, and you’ll end up with gaps between the countertops and between your cabinets and the wall they are mounted on.

Maybe your choice to go with prefab cabinets stems from a desire to get your renovation done as quickly as possible. However, no matter what retailer you choose, prefab cabinets will never be “ready and waiting for pick up”. They’ll still need to be ordered in and delivered and you’ll either have to install them yourself or hire a contractor, adding costs and possible scheduling issues to your renovation plan. You also won’t save anytime if your prefab cabinets come flat packed and you have to BUILD them before you install them! You may also spend way more time searching for the “right” prefab cabinets because of limited design choices including colour, materials and size. Prefab cabinets are manufactured in standards sizes and if you’re renovating a unique shaped space you’ll have a lot of trouble getting those prefabs to fit and line up properly. So if you feel like you’re not a one size fits all person, then don’t shop for one size fits all cabinets.
Custom cabinetry is quite literally the solution to every one of the problems outlined above. With custom cabinets you’ll wait a bit longer and you’ll spend a bit more money, but the results are worth it. You’ll get a product that is exactly what you envisioned, one that works in your space to fit with the things you own and the people you live with. With a selection of high quality hardwoods that are available in a huge selection of colours you’ll get cabinets built for lifelong durability and a much higher resale value for the installation.
